INSPIRE DESIGN SOLUTIONS WITH RDM®
Engineering development through CAE provides a powerful workflow to streamline you design process. Knowing how to improve the performance based upon your structural simulation can be more challenging. The Reinforcement Derivation Method (RDM)® provides the next generation is simulation, engaging Simcenter Nastran Topology optimisation in a workflow to guide design. RDM® provides truly CAE led design, identifying the most efficient placement of material to develop you structure. Use RDM® to identify improvements, reducing design iterations and the time to deliver solutions. |

The Reinforcement Derivation Method (RDM)®
The Reinforcement Derivation Method (RDM)® bridges the development gap between Generative Design Techniques (Topology optimisation) and iterative development through CAE. Using the OptiAssist set-up trail, users can automatically generate & connect design space to envelop or extend their structures. Topology optimisation is solved to identify the most efficient reinforcement locations to meet structural targets for static and vibration requirements. Applying RDM typically reduces FEA iterations by half.
Applying RDM to your CAE led design process is deployed in two approaches:
- - Component Reinforcement
- - Load Path Improvement
Component Improvement
When developing components, the RDM trail allows automatic and interactive creation of material where designs may be reinforced. Optimisation data is automatically created and managed, identifying the most efficient locations and form to improve the performance of your developing component.

Load path Improvement
When considering the development of large assemblies, understanding the location of structural weaknesses can be challenging. Applying RDM load path identification and improvement techniques delivers a CAE led design approach to accelerate structural improvements. A key strength of RDM is its consideration of multiple load cases simultaneously, guiding engineers to solutions in greatly reduced timescales.

AUTOMATED PROPERTY AND SHAPE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH OPTIMISATION
Courtesey of Team Sonnenwagen Aachen |
When a design has been established, time consuming manual iteration can delay project timings with unpredictable timescales to meet performance targets. OptiAssist’s parametric optimisation provides automated iteration of your parts properties and geometry using the Simcenter Nastran Design Optimisation solver. Methods Include:
Automatically iterate and update your designs to meet requirements for stiffness, strength, vibration and buckling. |
Automated Shell Thickness Design Through Optimisation
Ideally suited for die-cast, moulded and machined thin wall structures, OptiAssist’s free-sizing approach eliminates the need for engineers to manually iterate the material thickness distribution of parts. Using completely free or user guided zone selections, OptiAssist efficiently develops the material thickness distribution to meet multiple structural requirements. Sub-divisions may be defined in one of the following ways:
- - Grid-Based
- - Polygon Face
- - Feature Angle
- - Full User Control
Thickness Development Example - Injection Moulded Stool
In this example, optimization wasn't applied as a separate stage to normal development. Optimization driven design was used to develop material thicknesses directly in the development cycle, completely eliminating manual iteration.

COMPOSITE LAMINATE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH OPTIMISATION
When developing a laminate for new part geometry, composite materials present tremendous flexibility to place fibres precisely where they are needed. Understanding the ideal placement of fibres, particularly when considering multiple loading requirements, is understandably challenging. Developed for the demands of Formula 1™, OptiAssist’s ply shape optimisation capability enables Simcenter 3D users to efficiently identify and develop composite laminates, evolving ply shapes to efficiently meet structural requirements. For existing laminates that are over mass budget or failing to meet performance targets, easily automate the iteration of plies and orientations through Optimisation. |

A PLATFORM FOR UNLOCKING DESIGN OPTIMISATION
Design optimisation techniques are not new, but their adoption into engineering developments remains relatively low; often applied by an 'optimisation expert.' OptiAssist for Simcenter 3D builds on GRM's experience of applying design optimisation to real world engineering developments, providing an interface that guides engineers, allowing them to unlock the capabilities of design optimisation.CONTACT YOUR LOCAL RESELLER
